At KMA we believe that successful succession and transition requires much more than purely the technical estate structures; it requires a deep understanding and engagement around the human capital and complex family dynamics. Our expertise lies in identifying potential fault lines and future risks, and where required, facilitating those critical conversations which, if left unaddressed, can threaten even the most robust legacy plans.
James, 52 – entrepreneur who has sold his business
“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me and my family. I owe you so much and am so very grateful.”
Following the successful sale of his business, James found himself grappling with a void. Despite being freed from financial and managerial concerns, he keenly felt the absence of the familiar routines, interactions, and challenges inherent in building an enterprise. As shifts in relationships with friends and family left him feeling adrift and purposeless, James turned to KMA for coaching support.
Through six coaching sessions with an experienced entrepreneur-turned-coach who empathised with his journey, James embarked on a transformative path. Together, they crafted a compelling plan for James's next decade—one that promises fulfilment and meaningful challenges.
Prue – 37 wanting out of the family business
“The process was informative, thought provoking and challenging – all in the right proportions; fun in parts as well. We were able to be honest about all our fears and expectations and now have a plan which we’re all agreed to and happy with.”
Early in her career, Prue fulfilled her expected role within the family business, making significant contributions. However, she perceived a disparity in involvement and contribution compared to her brother's participation. Complicating matters, there was a glaring absence of a formal succession plan, leaving uncertainty regarding future leadership and the business's direction.
Recognising the need for clarity and strategic foresight, KMA was engaged to facilitate dialogue and planning. Working closely with the founders and their two children with very different personalities, we navigated the delicate balance of business acumen and emotional intelligence. Together, we crafted a comprehensive succession plan and organizational structure aimed at ensuring the business's continued success and a seamless transition into the future.
David – marrying into the B family
“Thank you for making KMA available to me; they have been a godsend – brilliantly helpful.”
David, an Australian, entered the fold of the B family through marriage to R, the eldest daughter. Together with her two younger siblings, R inherited significant wealth and properties from the sale of a portion of her father's business, where the family remained actively involved.
Initially trained as an accountant, David chose to relinquish his career post-marriage, opting instead for a lifestyle centred around his sporting hobbies. He encouraged R to follow suit, stepping away from her role in the family business to prioritise travel. This shift in dynamics unsettled the entire family, straining the relationship between David and Mr. B, marked by misunderstandings and suspicion.
Rather than allowing tensions to escalate, the B family turned to KMA for assistance. We devised a structured onboarding program, intended not only to integrate David smoothly but also to establish a blueprint for future family members. This program covered the business's history, its intended legacy, roles and responsibilities, as well as expectations and behaviours.
Thanks to the implementation of this formalised onboarding process, David has seamlessly assimilated into the family, reclaiming his previous career path. Today, he is a fully integrated member of the B family, fostering a harmonious dynamic within the family unit.
